FAQ: How Do I Put In and Take Out My Contact Lenses?

Contact Lenses in Plano, TX

For those who don’t want to be encumbered by glasses, contact lenses offer the same vision correction without frames. That said, wearing these can be an adjustment. Unlike glasses, which you can put on and take off at will, there’s a technique to applying and removing your contact lenses.

We’ll now explain how to put in and take out these lenses in a clear, step-by-step matter ideal for first-time wearers.

Putting in Your Contact Lenses

Step 1: Wash your hands. Lather up with soap. Rinse for a few moments until your hands are clean. Then make sure your hands are fully dry.

Step 2: Open your contacts (if dailies) or retrieve your contacts from their contact lens case (if two-week disposables or monthly disposable lenses).

Step 3: Using your index fingertip, retrieve a single contact lens. Your finger should be on the rounded part of the lens, not any edges.

Step 4: Open your eye fully with your other hand, particularly the middle finger. Keep your head level as you do this.

Step 5: Move the contact lens into position. It should be hovering over your iris. Feel free to use a mirror for guidance to ensure you have the positioning right.

Step 6: Apply the contact lens to the iris. Do not use pressure. The contact should slip away from your fingertip easily. Your hands might not be dry enough if the contact lens doesn’t want to come off.  That said, take your time with this part so you avoid dropping or misplacing the contact in the eye.

Step 7: Using your eye, roll it around to get the contact lens into place. When closing your eyes, start with the lower lid and then the upper lid. This will take some practice, but you’ll get used to it eventually.

Step 8: Follow steps 1 through 7 for the other eye.

How ToTake Out Your Contact Lenses

Whether you wear dailies, two-week disposables, or monthlies, you must take your contact lenses out each night. You also must remove them when you’re going to take a shower or otherwise expose your face to water.

Here are the steps you should follow.

Step 1: Wash your hands again. Use soap and lather up. Rinse all the soap away. Then dry your hands completely before handling contacts.

Step 2: Use rewetting drops so the contact lenses will come out more easily.

Step 3: Go to a mirror, if possible. This may make the removal process easier, especially for first-time wearers.

Step 4: Open your eye as fully as you can.

Step 5: Find the contact lens in your eye. Look to the iris for traces of the lens.

Step 6: Pluck the contact lens edge with your index finger and thumb.

Step 7: Slowly and gently, pull the contact lens from your iris.

Step 8: Follow steps 1 through 7 for the other eye.

Step 9: If using two-week disposables or monthlies, clean your contacts. Let them sit in contact lens solution through the night. If using dailies, dispose of them.
